The Impossibility of Us by Katy Upperman (ARC Review)

The last thing Elise wants is to start her senior year in a new town. But after her brother’s death in Afghanistan, she and her mother move from San Francisco to a sleepy coastal village.

When Elise meets Mati, they quickly discover how much they have in common. Mati is new to town too, visiting the U.S. with his family. Over the course of the summer, their relationship begins to blossom, and what starts out as a friendship becomes so much more.

But as Elise and Mati grow closer, her family becomes more and more uncomfortable with their relationship, and their concerns all center on one fact—Mati is Afghan.

Beautifully written, utterly compelling, and ultimately hopeful, THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF US asks—how brave can you be when your relationship is questioned by everyone you love?

Before I jump into the review I want to say that I received an ARC from Bookcon of this book. And thank you to my dad for waiting on the line for me to get this ARC.

When I read Kissing Max Holden, I fell in love with Katy Upperman’s writing and the characters she introduced us to. But when I read The Impossibility of Us, I fell head over heels in love with Mati and Elise. Their relationship and their friendship was something fierce. This book touches upon so many important topics such as Islamaphobia, grief, love and so much more. I was nervous to read this at first, knowing that it was going to break my heart but I am so glad I read it.

I finished it in one sitting as I cried, laughed and sighed with each and every page. This story touches upon the delicate topic of grief, and how to navigate the world without the one you love. I felt anger towards Elise’s mom with her quick judgement and refusal to see that Mati is a great person, the more I got to know him the more I loved him.

This book broke down so many common misconceptions and I love how Mati’s chapters were written in verse, it made the story even more emotional. I can not recommend this book enough and shout about it enough. I think everyone should read this. I can not wait for her next release, because I need more of her stories in my life.
