The Heartbreak Cure by Amanda Ashby

36476507._UY640_SS640_

How to get over a heartbreak:

Step one: Eat your body weight in brownies.

Step two: Throw yourself into your dreams of becoming a famous writer.

Step three: Beg your (hottie) ex-neighbor to act as your fake boyfriend.

Step four: Skip step three unless you’re ready for some serious fallout.

After being dumped and humiliated over the summer, Cat Turner does what any sane girl would do. She asks bad boy Alex Locke to be her fake boyfriend and show the world (and her editor at the school newspaper) that she’s fine. Problem is, the more time she spends with Alex, the more she risks getting her heart broken. For real this time.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains a swoony bad boy who will melt your heart, brownies, and witty banter. One, two, or all three might prove addictive…

*Before I jump into the review I want to thank Netgalley and Entangled Crush for sending me a free e-arc in exchange for this review.*

I have always loved the fake-relationship trope (can it be considered a trope? If not, it is now.) Any book that has my premise, has me hooked because they are so dang cute. And this one was no different at all. I also want to say that I never thought I was going to love e-books or reading on an e-reader as much as I do now.

Cat’s dad ran off before she was born and Alex lost most of his family in a drug caused car crash. Cat has sworn off men due to her last boyfriend posting an embarrassing video clip of her online. Alex has decided that loving someone only causes them pain, so its better to be guarded and only have yourself.  And then we have Birdie, Alex’s meddling and well-meaning grandma who believes the way to cure anything is by baking brownies.

Alex has a rough past and wants to get out of his small town to be as far away from the pain it has caused him and his grandmother. Cat knows not to push him to talk about, but this rough past becomes a problem later on.  Alex and Cat are meant for each other. They just are, they are two best friends who would go to the end of the world for each other and they don’t even need to say it. He cares about her so deeply and she just wants him to be happy.

Alex developed a lot more in this story than Cat did which I was fine with, because to me this story was more about him. Him learning to love, to forgive, to grow and to open up. For Cat, she learnt that all men aren’t like her dad and her ex-boyfriend and she help facilitate Alex’s growth.

The writing of this story is fun and easy, making it feel like you’re actually going through the whole thing with the characters. Alex is brooding and so very hot, Cat is very lucky to have someone like him.

Also!!! Extra points for having adults around who are caring and not stupid! Cat’s mom has a good head on her shoulders and is actually aware of what’s going on in her daughters life. Joe, who is Alex’s landlord and boss and stand in dad dude all in one, cares about Alex and wants to help him succeed. This is something we need more of in YA books.

This story does touch upon addiction, dead-beat parents, theft and grief.

I flew through this book, I think it took me two or three days to read it. I really recommend this to anyone who loves romance, contemporary and brownies.
