The Bride Test by Helen Hoang (Book Review)

39338454

Khai Diep has no feelings. Well, he feels irritation when people move his things or contentment when ledgers balance down to the penny, but not big, important emotions—like grief. And love. He thinks he’s defective. His family knows better—that his autism means he just processes emotions differently. When he steadfastly avoids relationships, his mother takes matters into her own hands and returns to Vietnam to find him the perfect bride.

As a mixed-race girl living in the slums of Ho Chi Minh City, Esme Tran has always felt out of place. When the opportunity arises to come to America and meet a potential husband, she can’t turn it down, thinking this could be the break her family needs. Seducing Khai, however, doesn’t go as planned. Esme’s lessons in love seem to be working…but only on herself. She’s hopelessly smitten with a man who’s convinced he can never return her affection.

With Esme’s time in the United States dwindling, Khai is forced to understand he’s been wrong all along. And there’s more than one way to love.

Khai is different than the rest of his family. He doesn’t like the way certain sensations feel, he doesn’t understand why he can’t feel emotions like everyone else, certain smells make him want to vomit and he firmly believes he’s broken. Esme Tran knows she’s different than the other people she lives with in Vietnam, she doesn’t look like them and she does a job that most people would never consider. But when she gets the chance to go to America, to give herself a better life, she knows she has to do it. But how can she, a woman who feels SO much convince a man who feels nothing that he loves her?

I LOVED The Kiss Quotient and was SO excited to read the next novel in the series about Khai and his life. This WAS SO MUCH FUN!

Khai has autism and lives his life differently. He likes things a certain way, he’s not used to certain things. But then Esme comes into his life and everything changes. Esme is kind, caring and driven. She is learning a new culture and a new language.

I loved reading about characters who are so different from me and I loved Esme more than anything. She is driven, fierce, loving and smart. She is determined to make a better life for her family, even if this plan with Khai doesn’t work out.

This book was amazing and I think everyone should read it.
