Too cool for school . . . or the least groovy girl in the grade?
Sunny’s just made it to middle school . . . and it’s making her life very confusing. All her best friend Deb wants to talk about is fashion, boys, makeup, boys, and being cool. Sunny’s not against any of these things, but she also doesn’t understand why suddenly everything revolves around them. She’s much more comfortable when she’s in her basement, playing Dungeons & Dragons with a bunch of new friends. Because when you’re sword fighting and spider-slaying, it’s hard to worry about whether you look cool or not. Especially when it’s your turn to roll the 20-sided die.
Trying hard to be cool can make you feel really uncool . . . (taken from goodreads.com)
Sunny and her friends are growing up. They are finding new interests, but Sunny’s seem to be very different from those of her close friends. But will her new interests really be the reason her and friends are drifting? We all know middle school isn’t easy, but it will be even harder if Sunny doesn’t have friends.
I really loved this graphic novel. Sunny makes friends with a group of boys who love to play Dungeons and Dragons. Her and best friend Deb join in, but slowly Sunny sees she likes the game more than Deb does.
This novel was so much fun. I have not read many novels that show young girls enjoying D&D, which is stereotypically a male dominated game. I love how this shows Sunny making new friends and learning to like her own things.
Her group of friends is diverse and I think this is a great representation of showing that toys and games aren’t for only one group of people. Anyone can play any game that they want.
This was super cute and I highly recommend this!!
