Home on leave in sunny California, Marine and local lothario Kit Ryan finds himself dangerously drawn to his best friend’s sister, Jessa – the one girl he can’t have.
But Kit’s not about to let a few obstacles stand in his way and soon Jessa’s falling for his irresistible charms.
What starts out as a summer romance of secret hook-ups and magical first times quickly develops into a passionate love affair that turns both their worlds upside down.
When summer’s over and it’s time for Kit to redeploy, neither Kit nor Jessa are ready to say goodbye. Jessa’s finally following her dreams and Kit’s discovered there’s someone he’d sacrifice everything for.
Jessa’s prepared to wait for Kit no matter what. But when something more than distance and time rips them apart they’re forced to decide whether what they have is really worth fighting for.
Kit has always been off limits, he’s her brothers best friend and her dad wishes he was never friends with his son. But neither of those things can stop Jessa from feeling the way she does. Kit is home from the Army and cant seem to help his attraction to the one person he should be staying far away from. Jessa has always done what she was supposed to do, until Kit came into the picture and she starts throwing all the rules out the window. While Jessa’s brother is one of the challenges in their relationship, the biggest one is her father. His PTSD and inexplicable hate towards Kit keeps Jessa from sharing their love with the world. The two spend the summer falling in love and growing in many different ways.
I had no clue this book ever existed until I saw Taylor, from taylortalksbooks talking about this book and how swoon worthy the guys in her books are.
And man, was she right. Kit is fantastic. He is so good.
Very rarely do I take out books from the library that I want to add to my collection. The last time that happened I was about thirteen and had read Anna and The French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. And this is the next one I plan on buying, I don’t care if I read the whole trilogy from the library I NEED to own them. I am such a hopeless romantic that this book has given me the fix I have been NEEDING for ages.
I love how the book alternates POV, one chapter is told by Jessa and then the next by Kit. I like being able to get to know the whole story and get to really know Kit. Their love is intense and real, making you believe in true love again.
It is a hot and steamy romance while having all the innocence of a first love at the same time. They are meant for each other and fight for each other no matter what, or at least they try.
Jesse’s family is very confusing. Her mom is loving and amazing, her dad suffers from PTSD and her brother is kinda all over the place. Her dad is a war vet who suffers from PTSD due to his time spent at war. He really develops throughout the book when the family dynamic takes a big turn, we see him break down and really become a better man. Jessa learns a lot about her family and herself.
I think family plays a really big role in this story. And I like that a lot. Jessa’s family is nowhere near being perfect and Kit’s dad is also a war vet who is a widow and a recovering alcoholic. Kit’s dad welcomes Jessa into their family and makes her feel like she’s at home, giving her a place to escape when things with her dad get really bad. Both families grow and learn how to deal with all the challenges that life throws at them.
Something else the book does deal with is grief, and I like the way it talks about it. Grief is different for each person, it comes in waves and everyone grieves differently.
I am very excited to read the rest of the books in this trilogy.
