City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know…

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare’s ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

As you guys know, I am not a fantasy reader (I mean, besides for Harry Potter.) I really didn’t think I was going to like this, but 2017 was the year I decided to out of my reading comfort zone and reading things I didn’t think I would ever pick up. And I ended up really enjoying a lot of the books I read. I think this is one of my favorite ones that I read in a new genre.

Clary and Simon go to Pandemonium Club in the city, they witness a murder. But the problem is, only Clary can see those who were involved. She follows them out and ends up befriending the Shadowhunters.

I love how it takes place in Manhattan, which is where I live, it made the book so much easier to understand. That’s my biggest problem with fantasy, I can’t imagine these worlds that are being created. Also, I love how it’s modern! It’s not taking place in the 1800s. It had a modern twist to it, which made me love it even more.

Jace has already taken a special place in my heart, with his golden hair and brooding personality. I love how loyal and fierce he is. Alec and Isabelle are amazing friends to Jace, they are caring and I hope we get to the see the Lightwood siblings really shine in some of the following books. There’s Simon, Clary’s non-shadowhunter best friend. Sometimes I find Simon annoying and sometimes I just want to hug him.

And then of course, we have Clary. Our star. Clary is strong, loyal, fierce, loving and devoted to finding out more about her mom and this world. She wants nothing more than to keep her loved ones safe, she kind of reminds me of a mixture of Hermonie Granger and Ron Weasley. She’s a fast learner and a loyal friend.

I am so excited to read the rest of the series and I am so happy I decided to break out of my reading comfort zone! Whats one genre you don’t read but want to try?
