Cameron’s cosplay–dressing like a fictional character–is finally starting to earn her attention–attention she hopes to use to get into the CalTech costume department for college. But when she wins a major competition, she inadvertently sets off a firestorm of angry comments from male fans.
When Cameron’s family moves the summer before her senior year, she hopes to complete her costume portfolio in peace and quiet away from the abuse. Unfortunately, the only comic shop in town–her main destination for character reference–is staffed by a dudebro owner who challenges every woman who comes into the shop.
At her twin brother’s suggestion, Cameron borrows a set of his clothes and uses her costuming expertise to waltz into the shop as Boy Cameron, where she’s shocked at how easily she’s accepted into the nerd inner sanctum. Soon, Cameron finds herself drafted into a D&D campaign alongside the jerky shop-owner Brody, friendly (almost flirtatiously so) clerk Wyatt, handsome Lincoln, and her bro Cooper, dragged along for good measure.
But as her “secret identity” gets more and more entrenched, Cameron’s portfolio falls by the wayside–and her feelings for Lincoln threaten to make a complicated situation even more precarious.
This was probably one of the best books I have read this year so far. I’m not even going to try to give a shorter synopsis of this book because I know I will not do it any justice.
The characters in this book are diverse, strong and developed. They are fierce and know what they want. Even douchenozzle butt-faced Brady knows what he’s going after, but the way his character develops is just plain amazing.
I originally picked this up because “She’s The Man” is one of my all time favourite movies and I love any book that has any similarities but this was BETTER than that.
Cameron develops throughout story, dealing with cyberbullying and even real life bullying by Brady. Her twin brother, Cooper also develops. Both of them learn how to navigate first loves, heart breaks, bullying and being themselves.
Cameron is extremely talented, she creates costumes and sews and is just insanely creative.
The friends she makes are great, Lincoln and Why are great guys. She learns alot from them.
When Cameron is Boy Cam, she finds it easier to be around these guys. She realizes that when dressed like a boy its easier to avoid the unwanted attention women get from men, that was an eye opening experience for her.
There were pages of comics that really helped bring the Dungeons and Dragons scenes to life.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It made so many amazing points and the book was just SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO good! I really recommend this as a summer read to EVERYONE.
