Amy Curry is not looking forward to her summer. Her mother decided to move across the country and now it’s Amy’s responsibility to get their car from California to Connecticut. The only problem is, since her father died in a car accident, she isn’t ready to get behind the wheel. Enter Roger. An old family friend, he also has to make the cross-country trip – and has plenty of baggage of his own. The road home may be unfamiliar – especially with their friendship venturing into uncharted territory – but together, Amy and Roger will figure out how to map their way.
I have no clue why I put off reading this book for so long. I had some weird idea that it was going to be something I wouldn’t enjoy. But boy was I very very very very very very very wrong.
Amy Curry doesn’t drive, she won’t do it. Roger has to get to the other side of the country in Amy’s car. For the first time in her life, Amy is gong to throw caution to the wind and do what she wants.
I loved this book. Roger and Amy are fun characters. Both of them are grieving and going through a pivotal time in their lives, having many changes they aren’t ready for. I always love the books that Morgan Matson writes, she is one of my favorites and by the time this is up I probably am back from the book launch event I went to where I got to meet her!!
But back to the book. Amy bottles up her feelings and refuses to talk about what is going, she doesn’t want to leave her home but she doesn’t want to be constantly reminded of what happened and how she can’t stop blaming herself for it. Her mom won’t talk about it and her brother is in North Carolina. Roger is dealing with a breakup he doesn’t want to believe is over, a dad who wants him to come spend time with him and Amy. They are unlikely pair but end up being the best.
I loved this. It talks about grief, depression, addiction, heartbreak and so much more. I love how the book isn’t centered on romance.
Amy makes friends along the way and learns to truly be her own person and not hide behind her clothing and try to blend into the background. She makes friends who see her for who she truly is and she shines.
I loved Roger. He is like the big brother you wish you had, he is sweet and dependable. He has his quirks and is kinda quiet, but he’s fun too. We really see him open up more and learn about him.
I didn’t listen to the playlists while I read this book but when I re-read it, I plan on listening to some of the songs. I really loved this book.
It has inspired me to really want to go on a road trip with friends and just have an epic adventure.
There is so much more I can say but I don’t want to ruin anything for anyone. So I really recommend reading this book! And the author is so lovely! I’m so happy I got to meet her.
